Portmanteau of「文房具」( bunbōgu, stationery) and「軍団」( gundan, legion) In a series of photos that scrolls through during the credits, the penultimate one shows all members of the Legion of Stationery in the Origami Craftsman's workshop in their original, inanimate, regular-sized forms.Įach of the members has a different title: Each member will also become available for a timed refight using a Bossotronic Fighter in the town's Battle Lab. They can be considered a villainous counterpart to the Things in Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Paper Mario: Color Splash, being large, realistic-looking, three-dimensional objects.Īfter Mario defeats a member of the Legion of Stationery, its Collectible Treasure form will be available for purchase from a Rocky Wrench at a pier behind a red warehouse in Toad Town. They were originally inanimate tools belonging to the Origami Craftsman before King Olly took them, enlarged them, and made them sentient. They are the game's main bosses aside from King Olly himself, with five of them guarding the ends of the streamers wrapped around Peach's Castle while the sixth one serves as Olly's personal guard. The Legion of Stationery is a group of giant sentient office tools allied with King Olly in Paper Mario: The Origami King. The happiest alley in all Shanghai! Part of Tianzifang, a maze-like district of cute little shopping alleys. He served under Mao from 1949 to 1976, the year they both died. This charming house, built in the ’20s, was for a while the home of Zhou Enlai, the first Premier of Communist China. A pretty shopping street in the French Concession. The Cathay Theater, an Art Deco movie palace opened in the ’30s. The French ConcessionĪfter the two temples, I explored the French Concession, the area of Shanghai that was controlled by the French for about a century prior to WWII. But I got caught up in the excitement of Shanghai, spent the rest of the day wandering all over the city, and never had that malaise again the rest of my trip. I thought maybe I’d go back to the hotel for the afternoon after visiting this temple. When I got to Jing’an Temple, I was feeling tired and really questioning if I could keep up this extreme sightseeing at my advanced age of 52. Seated Buddha in the Precious Hall of the Great Hero. People try to toss coins into this elaborate brazier for good luck. Yes, there’s always lots of incense burning at Buddhist temples. Golden rooftop features of Jing’an Temple. A rhinoceros in Jing’an Park, across the street from Jing’an Temple. It was severely damaged by fire in the ’70s and rebuilt in the ’80s. It suffered the indignity of being converted into a plastics factory during the Cultural Revolution. It was relocated to its current site in 1216 and rebuilt in the 19th century. The original Jing’an Temple was built in 247 in a different part of Shanghai. Having sufficiently investigated Jade Buddha Temple, I traveled on foot and by subway to central Shanghai’s second fabulous temple, Jing’an Temple (Temple of Peace and Tranquility). A very cool decoration on the exterior of the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings. No photographs are allowed of the Jade Buddha Temple’s stunning 6-foot-tall white jade seated Buddha. No photographs are allowed of the jade seated Buddha, which is 6-feet-tall and gorgeous. Both jade Buddhas were transported from Burma. Very cool! One of the temple’s 2 namesake jade Buddhas. Elephants in the courtyard at Jade Buddha Temple. Smoke is rising from these ladies’ incense sticks. And there’s always lots of incense burning. There is always lots of praying going on at Buddhist temples. They were too big to get all 3 in one picture. Two of the three Golden Buddhas in the Grand Hall. Hall of Four Heavenly Kings at Jade Buddha Temple. The temple was built to house two jade Buddhas imported from Burma in the late 19th century. My next destination was Jade Buddha Temple, one of central Shanghai’s 3 fabulous temples. I kept a close eye on streets signs (which were in Chinese and English) so I was sure when to get off. This bus ride went according to schedule. Actually, my bus adventure in Nanjing was the last bus adventure I had on my trip. No bus adventures this time like the last 3 days. When I was done with my visit to People’s Park, it was time to take a bus to my next destination. “Where are you going?” I was getting the hell away from them. They were exceedingly friendly and very curious to know about me, where I was from, what I was doing in Shanghai. I wasn’t handing my camera over to anyone, and I know what I look like. They asked me to take their picture and then asked if I wanted them to take my picture. Walking around People’s Park, I was approached by 3 attractive young ladies with umbrellas. A small segment of a heroic socialist monument in People’s Park. A revolutionary monument in People’s Park. This was a time when most of Shanghai was controlled by Western powers and Japan. May Thirtieth Movement Monument in People’s Park commemorates an anti-foreigner uprising that began in Shanghai in 1925. Such an establishment was way to Western and decadent for the Communists, so it was demolished after they seized power in 1949. People’s Park and adjacent People’s Square, where I wandered looking for my hotel late on Night 1, were built on the former site of a British racecourse for horse racing. I started the day in People’s Park, directly across from the hotel. And full it was, a complete tour of central Shanghai. Because my arrival in Shanghai was delayed a day and I was departing for Beijing the next afternoon, this was my only full day in Shanghai. It was such a relief to stay in Shanghai for the day rather than taking another day trip. Settlement Requires: Brick, Lumber, Wool, & Grain In this case, there is a 4 victory point swing!ī. If another player succeeds in building a longer road than the one created by the current owner of the "Longest Road" card, he immediately takes the Special Card (and its 2 victory points). The first player to build a continuous road (not counting forks) of at least 5 road segments, receives the Special Card "Longest Road". Only 1 road can be built on any given path. Road Requires: Brick & Lumber A new road must always connect to one of your existing roads, settlements, or cities. You cannot build more pieces than what is available in your pool-a maximum of 5 settlements, 4 cities, and 15 roads. Keep Development Cards hidden in your hand. Take the appropriate number of roads, settlements, and/or cities from your supply and place them on the game board. To build, you must pay specific combinations of Resource Cards (see the Building Costs Card). Through building, you can increase your victory points, expand your road network, improve your resource production, and/or buy useful Development Cards. (Important: The 4:1 trade is always possible, even if you do not have a settlement on a harbor). If you have a settlement or city on a harbor, you can trade with the bank more favorably: at either a 3:1 ratio or in special harbors (trading the resource type shown) at 2:1. You can also trade without the other players! During your turn, you can always trade at 4:1 by putting 4 identical Resource Cards back in their stack and taking any 1 Resource Card of your choice for it. The other players may not trade among themselves. (Important: Players may only trade with the player whose turn it is. The other players can also make their own proposals and counter off ers. You can announce which resources you need and what you are willing to trade for them. On your turn, you can trade Resource Cards with any of the other players. If there is not enough of a given resource in the supply to fulfill everyone's production, then no one receives any of that resource during that turn.Īfterwards you may trade freely (using either or both types of trades below) to gain needed Resource Cards: You receive 2 Resource Cards for each city you own that borders that hex. If you have 2 or 3 settlements bordering that hex, you receive 1 Resource Card for each settlement. The sum of the dice determines which terrain hexes produce resources.Įach player who has a settlement on an intersection that borders a terrain hex marked with the number rolled receives 1 Resource Card of the hex's type. You begin your turn by rolling both dice. You may also play one Development Card at any time during your turn.Īfter you're done, pass the dice to the player to your left, who then continues the game with step 1. You may build roads, settlements or cities and/or buy Development Cards. You may trade resources with other players or using maritime trade. You must roll for resource production (the result applies to all players). On your turn, you can do the following in the order listed: Unless you're using the Starting Set-Up for Experienced Players, the oldest player goes first. The Distance Rule means many intersections along roads will remain unoccupied. Roads may only be placed at the edges of the terrain hexes-1 road per edge. Important: Settlements and cities may only be placed at the corners of the terrain hexes-never along the edges. Take the appropriate Resource Cards from their stacks.Įach player keeps his Resource Cards hidden in his hand. You receive resources for each terrain hex around your starting settlement marked with a white star H (see Illustration A). Shuffle the Development Cards and place them face down by the board. Sort the Resource Cards into 5 stacks and put them face up next to the game board. Place the Special Cards "Longest Road" and "Largest Army" beside the game board along with the 2 dice. Note: Remove the red pieces from the game if you are playing a 3-player game). Place your remaining settlements, roads, and cities down in front of you. Place your 2 roads and your 2 settlements on the game board. Select a color and take your 5 settlements, 4 cities and 15 roads (no more and no less!). Place the circular number tokens on top of the designated terrain hexes.įinally, place your settlements and roads. (Note: Before your first game you must remove the die-cut components from the cardboard holders by carefully punching out and separate the pieces).Īssemble the frame as shown in 'Illustration A' (top of the page).Ĭreate Catan by placing the 19 terrain hexes on the table-again as shown.
