These early round coins (圜錢, huánqián) circulated alongside the knife and spade money. Warring States ĭuring the Warring states period, the first precursors of the Chinese cash coins started to appear. The trend of exclusively using the era names on currencies continued during the Qing dynasty, and all cash coins issued during this period were written in regular script.īelow is a list of obverse inscriptions that were used on Chinese cash coins organized by period and/or dynasty. Due to a naming taboo the term "Yuanbao" (元寶) was phased out from cash coin inscriptions as the founder of the Ming dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang had the word "Yuan" (元) in his name. Cash coins only contained the era names of the emperor during the Ming dynasty. This trend continued under the Ming dynasty. This was originally pioneered by the Southern Tang.ĭuring the Yuan dynasty, largely deprecated copper coinage was abandoned in favour of paper money. These cash coins are known as matched coins (對錢). During the Song dynasty a large number of different inscriptions was used, and several different styles of Chinese calligraphy were used, even on coins with the same inscriptions produced during the same period. This was also the first time regular script was used as all earlier cash coins exclusively used seal script. Over the years, cash coins have had many different inscriptions, and the Wu Zhu (五銖) inscription, which first appeared under the Han dynasty, became the most commonly used inscription and was often used by succeeding dynasties for 700 years until the introduction of the Kaiyuan Tongbao (開元通寳) during the Tang dynasty. The image below shows typically laterally adjacent depositional environments.īy Mikenorton - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, WikimediaĬhanges in depositional environments are driven by changes in base level, or the elevation of the terminal body of water (often, but not always sea level!). The kitchen and the yard are not laterally adjacent. Can you get from your kitchen to the grassy backyard without encountering something else? Nope, you have to cross the porch to get the yard. That means your kitchen and the porch are laterally adjacent. You can walk from the kitchen to the porch without encountering the grassy backyard. (If there IS something in between, that something is the laterally adjacent environment!) Imagine that your kitchen has a door to an outside porch, and your porch is just one step above your grassy back yard. So what are laterally adjacent depositional environments? Two depositional environments are considered laterally adjacent if you can walk from one to the next without anything in between. ![]() Some examples of depositional environments include meandering river, delta, beach, lake, swamp, shallow marine, and deep marine. Different types of sedimentary rock form in different depositional environments, so geologists can often figure out what existed at a particular place millions of years ago. A depositional environment is simply a place sediment can be deposited. If two things are right next to each other, they are laterally adjacent. Let’s break it down, starting with laterally adjacent and depositional environments. If there is something missing, there is missing time, or an unconformity. Walther’s law states that depositional environments that are laterally adjacent on the surface of the earth will also appear in succession in a stratigraphic sequence. Instead of dealing only with relative time, Walther’s law deals with relative space through time. ![]() Walther’s law is a little different from the previously discussed geologic principles, but it is justĪs important. Image of rocks: three are cut, the rocks on top are not Walther's Law By carefully examining which rock units are cut by faults or intrusions, or which rock units have been weathered, geologists can further determine the relative ages of rocks. Similarly to the principle of superposition, a rock must already be in place to be cut by a fault, igneous intrusion or erosion. A, b, c, d, e, f Cross-Cutting Relationships Knowing this, geologists can figure out the relative ages of rocks on top of each other. ![]() In order to deposit a sandstone on top of a limestone, the limestone has to already be there. If the table isn’t already there and you put the book down, it falls to the floor (and note! The floor had to be there for the book to land on it.). A simple way to think about this is that for something to be on top of something else, for example in order to put a book on top of a table, the table has to be there. This principle states that a sequence of rocks in their original orientation will have the oldest rock on the bottom and the youngest rock on the top. The rocks remain horizontal until a force acts on them, pushing (or pulling) them out of their original orientation. More sediment is deposited on top, and over time the whole sequence lithifies (sort of like the jello did in the fridge). As water moves sediment from high regions, like mountains, to low regions, like the ocean, the energy of the system decreases until the sediments are deposited in a basin, like a lake or an ocean. This is similar to how sedimentary rocks form. ![]() Now imagine that you have a jello mixture in the bowl - if you chill it and it solidifies, and then pour a different color on top, You have the two flat layers of jello, one on top of the other. If you dump that water into a bowl, the surface remains flat. The surface of the water is perfectly flat - horizontal. This is sometimes easier to envision with liquids: imagine pouring water into a cup. The principle of original horizontality states that sediment is deposited horizontally. Nooreen Meghani 2015 Original Horizontality ![]() That said, I am in favor of the idea because it will stop most joy-riders and kids from stealing your truck. And even if it is heavily modified it is very difficult to hide a vehicle (after it has been stolen) that is so unique, making it even less desirable to this "career" car thief. It is not all the desirable, (except for your catalytic convert) unless it is heavily modified. I'll take a dead battery over a missing 4Runner, any day. ![]() ![]() That way they get a block down the road and truck dies normally they abandon it.Ĭareer car thief, really? Let's face it, if someone is a "career" car thief they probably aren't going to risk there "career" over a mid sized SUV. ![]() The best I have seen, is to put the switch in-line with the fuel pump. I have seen these switches work a quite a few times. We could speculate for days but in reality, you don't know what you don't know. A kill switch is a VERY CHEAP small amount of insurance to make sure your 4Runner stays yours. It wouldn't have stopped anyone who really wanted it, but the goal was to buy enough time that they wouldn't want to risk being there long enough to figure it out. So those switches (I think it was 4x or 5x 2- & 3-way switches) had to be in a specific pattern for the button to do any good. I figured since it only took a screwdriver to start it after buying the new ignition switch I had to do something. piss break out in the Sierra National Forest on a fall afternoon a few miles out from home and the ignition switch broke) the steering lock had me stuck though, so I justed wrapped a big stick through the wheel and busted it. What I had done on the 80 was wire up a few toggle switches on the dashboard that were actually just wired in series if you followed the rat's nest back and forth from the firewall (Ya, I only did it on this one since I had to hot wire it the third time out. I never got around to doing it with my '86 and wish I would have after I walked out for my lunch break to see the empty parking spot. This is exactly what I did with my first two Toyota pickups and one VW. Using your wiring diagram, find the wire responsible for activating the starter solenoid and install a switch as far from the ignition as possible in that circuit (you don't want the potential crook to easily find it).The best type of switch for this is a push button The trickiest option is an ignition kill switch. The downside of this approach is that disconnecting the battery will reset the radio settings every timeno power means no memory features. This could be located under the hood, or the cable could be extended to put the switch under or beside the driver's seat (be sure to use 0-gauge cable and a heavy-duty rotary switch). More involved but supereffective is fitting a racing-style battery-disconnect switch on the positive battery cable. These small switches can be hidden and secured pretty much anywhereunder the seat, in the trunk, under the dashboard, in the gloveboxyou're limited only by how much work you want to do running new wire. The easiest method is to connect a simple on/off toggle to the positive circuit of the fuel pump. Any of these will quickly frustrate the bad guys into moving on to an easier target, but two or three will render a car virtually theft-proof.īefore making any modification, be sure to have a complete wiring diagram in hand, just so you're aware of which wires are which. These switches disrupt the flow of electricity at the battery or ignition switch or disable the fuel pump. Since parking in safe-looking spots is about as effective as wishing on a star, installing a well-hidden kill switch is a smart way to deter potential thieves. Anecdotal evidence indicates that mid-1980s to late-'90s Japanese cars are highly prized owing to their lucrative parts market and easy hot-wiring, but we have a good, cheap solution for any car, new or old. In 2011, thefts dropped to a reported 715,373 incidents, but even though fewer cars are being lifted, nobody wants to walk out to his parking spot and find it empty. Manufacturers responded to this problem with factory alarm systems and sophisticated electronic validation between the car and the ignition key. In 1991, the peak of auto theft according to FBI crime statistics, a staggering 1.66 million vehicles were stolen in the U.S. Have any ideas to make it theft-proof?Ĭar theft is a perennial problem that everybody worries about. I have a pickup I absolutely love, and would like to prevent it from being stolen. ![]() “Laundry stripping in a bathtub is effective, but it is inconvenient, time consuming, and messy,” Handel says. You can easily use your washing machine’s customized settings to get better results. There’s a more efficient way, Handel says. Transfer the wet clothes to dry, and wipe out the tub to prevent dye stains. But you’ll be left with cleaner clothes-and extensive cleanup duty. It’s potentially caustic, and Handel recommends wearing gloves and a mask to avoid touching and inhaling dispersed dust particles.Īfter you remove the laundry, leftover water might be murky gray, black, or the color of the fabric. But it also can remove dye and damage certain fabrics vulnerable to heat and high pH.” “The process can help soak away leftover residue. “We’re not exactly sure how it started, but laundry stripping may have grown out of the need to clean large items, like carpets and comforters, that wouldn’t fit into the washing machine,” says a CR test engineer, Richard Handel, who oversees our laundry lab. ½ cup washing powder or 2 cups washing liquidįill the bath or tub with the hottest water out of the tap, enough to cover the items completely.Īdd the item or items, stir and soak until the water goes cold - stirring every hour.Laundry stripping is the process of soaking one’s washables in a bathtub to extract built-up soil, detergent, and fabric softener from clothes, bedding, or anything you launder. ![]() I was shocked at how much of a difference it made on both loads of washing and it's something I will be doing again. Seeing the results from both the clothes and the blanket has made me want to strip wash literally everything I can now. As for the clothes, they came out of the wash feeling a lot fresher with the same really clean smell. It took around a day for the blanket to dry completely but it feels soft and smells amazingly clean now. The blanket after a few hours had turned the water a murky brown but the water at the end was disgusting. The clothes in the laundry tub were a lot easier to deal with, it was only a couple of hours until the water cooled down enough to put it all in the machine for a regular wash. The blanket is around king size and with the weight of the water it had soaked up there was no chance it was going in the machine, so I handwashed it in the bath - with a lot of help from my boyfriend, who also helped actually get it on the clothes line. In the end the water was absolutely disgusting and almost black after that much dirt and filth had come out. It took around five hours for the water in the bath to cool down enough to try and wash the blanket as normal, but there was a problem: it wasn't going to fit in the washing machine. The results from a general load of clothes in a strip wash were surprising but not shocking. Meanwhile in the laundry tub my clothes were also soaking in the mix and the water had started to go a cloudy colour, but nowhere near the colour of the blanket water. It was shocking to see just how quickly the filth was seeping out of the blanket. It was obvious the mix was already working its magic and with each stir the colour got worse. Within seconds of putting the blanket into the bath the water started to go brown. I decided to do the blanket in the bath and the load of clothes in the laundry sink. ![]() It didn't take long at all for the dirt and grime to start seeping out of the blanket. ![]() ![]() | Whats New in Visual Studio Docs Visual Studio 2022 version 17.0 Support TimeframeĮnterprise and Professional users of Visual Studio 2022 version 17.0 who are configured to receive updates on the 17.0 LTSC channel are supported and will receive fixes to security vulnerabilities through July 2023. McCay also inserted himself into the cartoon, thus combining live action and animation (imitated by the Fleischer brothers in their Out of the Inkwell series and by Walt Disney in his Alice in Wonderland silents). The cartoon would then roll, and McCay would put Gertie through her various “tricks” as if she were real and he was her trainer. McCay would enter the stage, cracking a whip, and calling forth Gertie. With these new tools and Fitzsimmons, McCay was able to create Gertie the Dinosaur, his most innovative, interactive, and enduring cartoon. McCay also invented the use of registration marks in the corners of the paper, so as to help maintain stability of the image when the actual photography took place (the paper and marks were later replaced as an industry practice with animation cels with registration pegs to do the same stabilization more effectively). He then went back and did what is called “inbetweening” or “tweening.” In the future, animation studios would use secondary artists to do these intermediary drawings, so as to allow their master animators to focus on the creative aspects of animation. McCay then produced one of the critical techniques in animation by doing the transitional points of animation (called key frames) first, to help lay out the overall action of the cartoon. McCay realized that he could not produce longer, more elaborate animations without assistance, so he brought in an assistant, John A. The ending is more charming, as Nemo and the Princess are carried away in the mouth of a friendly dragon, which has become a kind of throne. The animation itself only lasts about four minutes, and is largely a demonstration of stretching and squashing two of the characters at the behest of Nemo. Little Nemo is still worth watching, from the quaint ridicule that meets with McCay’s announcement that he can make pictures move to the somewhat silly behind the scenes creation of the cartoon. When the black and white release proved successful, McCay then hand-tinted the frames to further reproduce the look of the original Little Nemo comic. He mounted the rice paper on cardboard to facilitate shooting, then used a rotary machine to flip the cards so he could check the animation (another innovation, which can be seen in the short). McCay proceeded to use four thousand pieces of rice paper for his original cartoon, inventing the idea of numbering each drawing to maintain the sequencing. McCay realized the same principle could be used on separate film frames. The original idea came from his son playing with flipbooks, in which a child rifles the pages of a book rapidly with his finger, thus causing the individual drawings to appear to be in motion. McCay had already made a cartoon version of his famous Little Nemo in 1911, releasing it to both movie theaters and then using it in his vaudeville act. McCay was a very popular entertainer, but every vaudeville act needed a new gimmick now and then to keep things fresh.Īnd that’s where Gertie the Dinosaur lumbers into the picture in 1914. McCay would recite the famous lines “All the world’s a stage / And all the men and women merely players” while he drew the faces of a man and a woman – and then aged the pictures until he reached the final lines. ![]() One of his favorite routines was based on Shakespeare’s monologue about “The Seven Ages of Man” from As You Like It. McCay was also famous on the vaudeville circuit, where he supplemented his income as a cartoonist by doing what are still called “chalk talks.” With a large easel and a crayon, McCay would draw caricatures of audience members, or transform one picture into another while he kept up a comic patter. To this day, his Little Nemo in Slumberland has to be seen to be believed in all its baroque majesty. But animation historian Michael Barrier, the author of the indispensible Hollywood Cartoons, calls McCay “the first American animator of consequence” because he “made films that people wanted to see.” McCay had already been instrumental in helping to originate the comic strip in newspapers. Granted, McCay is not the first animator, American or otherwise (James Stuart Blackton and Émile Cohl tried the form sooner). As important as Walt Disney and Chuck Jones are in the history of animation as the ultimate masters of the form, McCay was the man who brought together many of the technical innovations that animators still use today, as well as being the first to create characters with whom audiences fell in love. ![]() ![]() McCay was one of those enormously important innovators who create whole new art forms. But the father of them all, and a man who deserves to be known as the father of American animation, is Winsor McCay, whose creation Gertie the Dinosaur was the very first dinosaur to be on the big screen.
